The world of affiliate marketing has been the target of many criticisms since its inception, most of which have been exaggerated, or completely unfounded.
There are, however, a few complaints I would consider legitimate. First, of course, is the embarrassing amount of hyped up and over-inflated claims that fill many sales pages. Next is that fact that many programs are practically bereft of a legitimate product. Sure, they all have something that may satisfy the legal definition of a product, but we have all seen plenty of programs in which the product takes a back-seat to an over-hyped commission plan.
I can deal with these sorts of issues, though. One has to accept that in any business you are going to have people of questionable ethics. When you live in a free market society, you have to keep your eyes open for the scams and be able to take care of yourself.
What does bother me about affiliate marketing is its tendency towards in-marketing (you know, like in- breeding). In my opinion, the fact that the majority of us send most of our time marketing our wares to each other, rather than to the general public, stifles the creativity of our industry and damages our credibility as legitimate enterprisers.
Sure, with the introcuction of FFAs, surf-4-hits and the like our industry was trying to create advertising options oor marketers with very little money to invest. Why not, right? I mean, everyone should get a shot at living their dreams.
Unfortunately, though, it has not exactly worked out for the best. Most of the people using free traffic quickly realize that the hit exchanges and FFAs are not much more than a big tail chasing party. The sellers far out number the buyers, and there simply isn't enough demand to go around. We might as well just all be sitting around the same poker table, playing cards night after night, pushing our piles of chips back and forth between each other, with no-one ever really getting ahead.
The worse thing about this, though, is that thousands of newbies get sucked into the free-ad-exchange mentality very early on and are distracted from the genuine opportunities for success that are waiting for them all over the web.
Most of them never realize that the only people who are building successful businesses and earning a good living on the net are those who break this cycle of peer-to-peer madness. Once you step beyond the hit-exchange arena there are plenty of lucrative and inexpensive advertising sources waiting to be discovered. To find them you just have to start trying this, trying that, spending a little there, spending a little there, until you gradually home in on a little niche in the market that you can count on to produce results.
To find your place in the market, though, you have to be wlling to experiment. Of course, in order to do this, you have to have a way of measuring your results. If you can't well what worked from what did not work, you will be spinning your wheels.
You will also have to spend some money. And since you probably do not have a lot of that to throw around, you will want to spend wisely and constantly keep an eye out for bargain advertising opportunities.
It also helps if you do not have to re-invent the wheel day after day. The right advice from someone who has been where you are and has gotten to the place you want to be is priceless. A little help from the right people can literally shave years off of the time it takes you to reach your goals.
