Intuitive Development Fosters Consciousness Raising and Psychic Abilities
We have only begun to reach into our great gifts when we choose to access our intuition, our inner knowing. From this stepping-stone we can reach that greater consciousness that supports our peaceful flow in this lifetime and encourages not only personal development but world awareness and peace. In fact, intuition is a type of guidance that is considered a form of Extra Sensory Perception, and is not the only guidance we have access to. Intuition is one stage of development that is accessed when we release layers of our unawareness. The more layers we release, the more skills we will begin to have awareness and use of.
This continuum of experience/guidance includes other forms of Extra Sensory Perception, which is the experience of knowing something beyond our generally perceived five senses. Additional awarenesses may include Telepathy (mind to mind communication), Clairvoyance (clear seeing), Precognition (perception of future events/opportunities), Retrocognition (seeing into the past), Clairaudience (hearing clear messages), Clairsentience (feeling the energies of an environment, another etc.) and more. These are also commonly known as psychic abilities and in the Yogi tradition, they are known as Siddhis, Yogic powers, arising from one’s spiritual development.
In Sufism I was taught to release the veils around my heart. To visualize this, you can imagine that you are unfolding the layers of an onion and at the center is the ultimate gift: your connection to your greatest self, authenticity, the oneness, God. Later, in Buddhist studies I began to see that each time I meditated, the layers from around the heart, noted in the other tradition, were also releasing here and I was beginning to have greater access to my intuition.
Over time, other gifts also arose. I had reached different levels of awareness through the meditation. These levels or stages are known in Buddhism as the Jhanas. The stillness and peace that I experienced in meditation, left a beautiful awakening each time. By clearing the mind and ultimately the heart, your awakening can occur.
Greater intuition is one of the first gifts that becomes stronger following meditation practice, and over time as the veils of our unawareness fall away, the other psychic abilities will, with right intention and commitment make themselves known. These will be accessed through stillness, but reinforced, refined, regularly accessed and sustained through additional intuitive development exercises and ultimately trust in you.
But these additional abilities are just the added bonus of this experience. Your consciousness also awakens! You begin to see, hear and experience the world in new ways. Your behaviours change and you recognize that not only are you calmer and more happy, but you cannot help but want to give of your self and share your compassion. The realization and complete feeling of being connected to everyone and everything actually occurs and is a profound awakening that cannot be removed from your consciousness once you have opened to this place.
People have often asked me, as an Intuitive, if I can tell what they are going through or what is going to happen to them. It is true that my intuitive abilities have extended to clairvoyance and precognition. A very crucial part of intuitive development is understanding and accepting the ethics and boundaries of self, other and the meaning of the work you do. If someone were to ask me at a party if I could see if they will have great things come their way, I might tell them that if they believe that great things will come, then they stand a better chance of that coming true, and then let it go at that.
Intuitive work is not for parlour tricks. Similarly, one of the key lessons of intuitive development is not to go where you are not invited to go. Doing so will invite receipt of the negative energies of the person you have invaded! All the more reason to keep one’s boundaries in check! Intuition will be lost if your work with it becomes about ego attachment. This awakening from within is not only about you, it is about something necessary to utilize honourably and effectively so that the world can come to experience peace and awareness of oneness again.
Intuitives need to be at the forefront of cultivating a community of trust, where our openness to the universe is one of love, not fear, not game playing and certainly one with appropriate boundaries. Demystifying intuitive skills is crucial, not only for ourselves, but for the community at large who tend to fear them.
Intuition is so normal, so real and absolutely available to use in each moment. You can’t go wrong with intuitive development, as it awakens you to so many possibilities. Your consciousness expands and you begin to see the world in unique ways with new and marvelous skills in hand. Intuition is within you waiting to be explored and there are so many positive ways to utilize it. Such wonderful opportunities are offered when we are open to working with intuition each day!
