The 39th Super Bowl has come and gone. There was a winning team, a losing team, and so much hype you couldn't even count the pitches.
And there was * plenty * for online marketers like us to learn from the experience.
Here are three lessons I learned along with how you might apply these lessons to your business. You can be I'll be applying them.
===> Lesson 1. Chevy taught us how to delay the launch of a new product.
Corvettes are popular. Men and women both like Vettes, and a new convertible Vette is a big deal in the car world.
But they don't want to release it yet. They want to introduce it when the weather is more appropriate for a convertible. So, what did they do?
They turned their weakness into a strength! They show the car in such a way that Vette fans see something, then they say "not yet".
APPLICATION: Do you have a new product that is not quite ready for release? Try PRE-SELLING it and watch as your next release becomes your best ever.
** Anticipation is a powerful selling force. **
===> Lesson 2. Budweiser taught us that targeting and consistency is the key to successful advertising.
Budweiser knows their market. Their customers watch football. And they know consistency. The question on Monday morning was not "Did Bud advertise?" The question was "Did you see the new Bud ad?"
Any business that knows their audience and is consistent will succeed every time.
APPLICATION: First, know your audience. Who do you want to reach? Second, be consistent. Placing one ad and quitting won't do the job. You've got to be in the game to win.
By the way, ezine advertising is the BEST way possible to reach a target audience. And The Directory of Ezines is the fastest way to find the right ezines. Check it out. http://www.directoryofezines.com
And now for the #1 LESSON
===> Lesson 3. Learn and execute on the basics and you will win every time!
If you watched the game you saw a lot of people trying very hard to do the basics of their business well. What are their basics? Block, tackle, run, throw, catch, and score.
What you DIDN'T see was innovation. No fancy-shmancy plays. No odd formations. No new running or pass patterns.
What you DID see was two groups of individuals doing their very best to execute the basics well.
One player from the losing team said this. "Mistakes and turnovers made the difference."
Mistakes and turnovers = not doing the basics well.
Yep, executing on the BASICS is what brings success.
APPLICATION: What are the basics for an online business? How well are you executing the basics?
What are the mistakes you must avoid in your online business? Here are the big three from where I sit.
1. Not having a follow up system in place.
98% of visitors to your site will not buy. If you are not following up by email, inviting them back for a second look, they will NOT come back. Follow up is a basic skill you must master to succeed.
2. Quitting on your marketing message too soon.
Budweiser is brilliant. They know their target market and you can bet they are ALWAYS going to have a voice in that market. Do they suffer from fierce competition? Yes. Do they prevail? Yes. And the reason is that they are always there, always reminding their target audience that Bud is the king of beers.
A simple message, often repeated, builds a business.
Are you quitting on your marketing message too soon? If you place one ad and quit because it didn't work, you are quitting too soon. If you joined a business but didn't succeed quickly, you may have quit too soon. If you bought an eBook you thought would help but didn't read it, you quit too soon.
3. Working IN your business instead of ON your business.
There is a subtle, but very important, difference between working IN and ON your business. Here are some examples.
* When you answer customer questions you are working in your business. * When you place ads you are working in your business.
* When you set up a follow up system, you are working ON your business. * When you polish your web copy, you are working ON your business.
To be clear, you have to work in and on your business to succeed. But many small business people fail because they never work ON their business.
Are you working on your business?
If there is one message I could convey to every person I'd like to help it's this. Identify the basics of success in your business and MASTER those tasks. Do that, and you will succeed.
Superbowl XXIX was no different from past games, and no different from what future games will bring. The team who executed the basics best won, and will win.
Are you mastering the basics of your business?
